European Association of Climate Law

Advancing legal responses to climate change

The European Association for Climate Law (EACL) e.V. is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing the study of climate change and law in Europe and beyond. By providing a platform for in-depth discussions, fostering collaboration among legal experts, and supporting the participation of young scholars, EACL seeks to strengthen legal responses to climate change from global to local levels.

Membership

Any natural person who is academically engaged in climate law or who otherwise makes a substantial contribution to research in this field may apply for an EACL membership.

Members are entitled to take part in the Association’s committee work and scientific activities (e.g. specialist working groups). In addition, members benefit from a reduced fee for the annual conference.

Membership is free of charge in 2025. Starting in 2026, the annual membership fee is €150. A reduced rate of €50 applies to academics, representatives of non-profit organisations, and members of the public service.

If you are interested in becoming a member, please submit your application using our online form. Further details on the application process can be found in the Association’s bylaws.

Founding Conference

Climate Law in Europe:
Taking Stock – Looking Forward

More than one hundred participants joined the first conference of the European Association of Climate Law (EACL) in Berlin on 22–23 September 2025.

The opening day featured an Early Career Researcher Workshop on Climate Law and Intergenerational Justice, followed by an inspiring keynote from Christina Voigt (University of Oslo).

Day two offered a rich programme of presentations and panel discussions on:

  • European Climate Law in an Evolving World
  • Litigation and Legislation as Drivers of European Climate Law
  • The Role of Law in Promoting Corporate Climate Action
  • Climate Law as a Cross-Cutting Area of Law

The EACL Conference 2025 was organized in cooperation with the Institute für Climate Protection, Energy and Mobility (IKEM) and Leuphana University Lüneburg. This inaugural conference was supported by the Fritz Thyssen Stiftung.

Sponsorship Opportunities

To ensure the success of the EACL, we invite institutions, organizations, and individuals to support our efforts through sponsorship. Sponsorship contributions will help facilitate meaningful discussions, enable broad participation—including early career researchers—and strengthen the impact of climate law research in Europe and beyond.
