Liability issues regarding Ammonia

IKEM is investigating the liability and environmental challenges of using ammonia as a zero-emission marine fuel.

Ship tanker gas LPG top speed on the sea for transportation.

Project

As an emission-free energy source, ammonia offers great potential for the decarbonization of shipping. However, its use as a marine fuel also harbors some risks. This is particularly true in view of its toxicity and possible environmental hazards in the event of uncontrolled release of ammonia into water, for example in the event of an accident. As part of the project, IKEM is investigating the legal liability challenges associated with the use of ammonia as a maritime fuel in the multi-level system and developing proposals for the further development of the legal framework.
